Slippage and price impact in arbitrage

Slippage is the gap between expected and actual execution. Its source and estimation method differ between a CEX order book and an AMM pool.

Slippage in a CEX order book

A marketable order can consume several levels. Analysis compares working-size VWAP with the best visible price and must consider book freshness.

DEX price impact and slippage tolerance

Price impact comes from pool mechanics and swap size. Slippage tolerance is the user's allowed movement between quote and transaction; it is not a loss forecast.

Price deviation (%) = (execution price / reference price − 1) × 100

Frequently asked questions

Can slippage tolerance be set to zero?

The transaction may fail on minor pool movement; an appropriate limit depends on the chain, token, and MEV exposure.

Does slippage increase with trade size?

Usually, especially in a thin book or small AMM pool, although the relationship is not linear.
